The Castello del Governatore o Capitano della Piazza includes: the Capitano district, the crossing tunnel, the area dedicated to the Guardhouse by day and by night, the saltpeter’s warehouse, the cannon balls and the pusher trestles. The structure, moreover, is equipped with a balcony for the sentry’s watch.
In the eighteenth century the castle became the customs officer’s quarter, while today it houses the headquarters of the Historical Archive and is an important reference point for historians from all over Europe. The Castle is also home to the “G. Rossini” School of Music and the local associations “Borgo Romano” and “Sbandieratori, Musici e Uomini d’Arme”.
