Il Castagneto monumentale di Pigara

MARRADIITINERARIES-NATURE
An ancient forest that dates back about 350 years ago

From Marradi, to reach the monumental chestnut grove of Pigara, you have to leave near Crespino del Lamone in Valbura. Here you can park your car near the hydroelectric plant, then cross the bridge located on the Lamone river and continue along the CAI path 527 up to the “Pigara” farm. Then continue for a while until you reach the chestnut grove.

The plants of this wonderful chestnut grove have been planted in regular rows about 350 years ago. Probably it was planted when, the current country of Crespino, was the seat of a Monastero dell’ordine dei Frati Vallombrosani.

In 1600 a fire seriously damaged the archive of the Monastery, so it is not possible to document with certainty the origins of the chestnut grove, but numerous other writings of the period confirm its presence.
