Lago di Quarto

SARSINANATURE
A body of water surrounded by a dense forest

Quarto is a village of the upper Savio located at 400 m s.l.m. which is a few kilometers from Sarsina. The lake of the same name is an artificial basin that was formed following a catastrophic landslide that blocked the course of the river Savio.

After the landslide, the electric company in the area thought to exploit these waters for the production of electricity, creating, in 1922, a dam and a hydroelectric plant. Thanks to this intervention a new body of water was formed with a capacity of millions of cubic meters.

Lago di Quarto today represents an environment of great naturalistic interest and is a point of reference for the entire Valle del Savio. The basin is dominated by a thriving black pine forest, while the banks are swarming with reeds and junipers. The fauna is composed of the mallard, kingfisher, coot, the moorhen and the water rail. The waters of the lake are populated by more classic fish species such as eels, carp, trout, tench.
