Santa Sofia

Where contemporary art blends with nature

Santa Sofia is a land border between Romagna and Tuscany, is reflected in the Bidente river and enjoys the majestic nature that surrounds it, consisting of beautiful forests and fields that are lost in the horizon.

The town, like other surrounding municipalities, is part of that area of territories that until 1923 were part of the Tuscany region and now belong to the Romagna administration.

This country has long been divided in half by a State border: tuscan and romagnolo styles here you meet and melt, as can be seen also in the typical architecture of several buildings that make up the town.

It is certain though that Santa Sofia can be defined without doubts as the center of contemporary art of Romagna Apennines. A real reference of excellence thanks to the contemporary art gallery “Vero Stoppioni?” and Parco di Sculture all’aperto, which features several works by artists of national and international caliber, intertwined with the environment nearby, a place to discover and get involved.

On the handicraft side, instead, the Olivetti printed canvas workshop, present in Santa Sofia, opened at the beginning of the ’70s. The printed romagnole paintings are a typical artisan form of the territory, whose origins date back to the 1700s when the cattle were covered with cloths bearing the medallion depicting S. Antonio Abate. Many culinary specialties of the area are recognized as slow food principals: among these the tortello to the slab, the sausage “matta”, the Raviggiolo cheese and the tasty fruits of the undergrowth.
