Sanctuary of Montepaolo
Montepaolo, a hilltop town between Castrocaro Terme and Dovadola, was between 1221 and 1222 the first permanent residence in Italy of Sant’Antonio. Here he lived in a small convent granted for use to a small group of friars minor of Saint Francis of Assisi. The building was a few hundred meters below the current sanctuary.
In the early twentieth century the Sanctuary was built, today an important pilgrimage destination dedicated to the cult of Saint Anthony.
