L’Abbazia di Sant’Ellero in Galeata was founded in the 5th century by S.Ellero and was a fundamental religious and medieval cultural center. The church, located on a relief outside Galeata at a height of about 200 meters, can be reached either by a road that can be traveled by car or by an ancient mule track.
The building has a Romanesque façade made of sandstone blocks; the portal with columns is decorated with capitals and a large rose window. The most interesting part of the church is the crypt where, in a sarcophagus decorated with crosses, the relics of S. Ellero are preserved and venerated.
Near the abbey is reported the place where they seem to have met Sant’Ellero and Teodorico. A column surmounted by a cross serves to recognize the place of the meeting.
