Sant’Andrea Church

DOVADOLACHURCHES
Inside is the grave of Benedetta Bianchi Porro

The Abbazia di Sant’Andrea, dating back to the year one thousand, was built on a rise beyond the Montone river, where an Abbey founded by the Cluniac monks had once been built.

The façade, which has undergone restoration in the years 1983-88, is in Romanesque style and contains notable pictorial works: the Our Lady of Sorrows, from the Romagnola school of the early 16th century, the Vergine col Bambino in gloria con Santi, of Umbrian style. Marches of the mid-1500s, the Martirio di Sant’Andrea Apostolo, oil on canvas from the seventeenth-century Bolognese school and other works.

The sarcophagus with the remains of Benedetta Bianchi Porro, a young lay woman born in Dovadola in 1936, has considerable importance. The tomb was created by the painter Angelo Biancini and is a pilgrimage destination for believers who from all over Italy reach the Abbazzia di Dovadola to give homage to Benedetta.
