The route of the ancient pilgrims in the heart of the Romagna Apennines

The Via Romea Germanica is one of the great paths of Europe that lead to Rome. Born as the “Melior Via” to connect Germany to the Eternal City, the Via Romea Germanica traces the journey made by Abbot Albert of Stade in 1236 to Rome and meticulously transcribed in his diary of Travel.

Arrival at Castrocaro Terme and Terra del Sole.
Nestled on the hills of the Tuscan-Romagnolo Apennines, the town has been a renowned spa since the late nineteenth century, with a long and prestigious history, dating back to the Middle Ages and which led it to be the capital of the Romagna Tuscany Province in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.

Surrounded by nature, Montepaolo is the ideal place to restore the spirit, where stands the Hermitage of Monte Paolo, one of the most important sanctuaries in Emilia-Romagna that preserves the memory of St. Anthony of Padua.

Arrival in Dovadola:
Pretty town surrounded by green hills, territory of the precious white truffle. Known for the imposing Rocca dei Conti Guidi and the figure of the blessed Benedetta Bianchi Porro, buried in the Abbey of Sant’Andrea.
Lunch in a bar-tavern in the central square.

Return to Castrocaro Terme and dinner in a local restaurant.
Overnight.

Departure from Castrocaro and arrival at Predappio Alta.
Medieval village that stands on a rocky spur.

Lunch in an amazing wine shop of the village.

Arrival in Predappio
Birthplace of Benito Mussolini, Predappio is an original testimony of the urban and architectural styles of the Twenties with the triumph of Rationalism. Surrounded by fine vineyards, from which is obtained the Sangiovese doc, the most appreciated and widespread of the wines of Romagna.

Dinner in Predappio and overnight in B&B.

From PREDAPPIO, ROCCA DELLE CAMINATE to CUSERCOLI

Departure from Predappio.
Beautiful panoramic view passing by the Rocca delle Caminate.

Former summer residence of Benito Mussolini and currently center of higher university education.
Picnic on the way.
Arrival in Cusercoli.
The small ancient village stands on a limestone spur dominated by the mighty medieval castle of the Counts Guidi.
Dinner and overnight in Cusercoli.

Day 5

Departure from Cusercoli. Stop at Galeata.

Known for the archaeological area of the Roman city of Mevaniola near the village of Pianetto, while the findings of the museum Mambrini testify to the ancient history of Galeata. A must is the Abbey of Sant’Ellero, home to a thousand-year cult linked to the relics of the saint.

Lunch in Galeata.

Arrival in Santa Sofia.

Santa Sofia is a borderland between Romagna and Tuscany and enjoys the majestic nature that surrounds it. True center of contemporary art of the Romagna Apennines that sees different works of national and international artists, intertwine with the surrounding environment, in a place to discover and get involved.

Dinner in a local restaurant.
Overnight in Santa Sofia in a Hostel.

Understand in its territory the National Park of the Casentino Forests, unique for the beautiful scenery that offers and ideal destination for those who love hiking.
